THE FIRST STEP
Before we talk about transformation, recovery, spiritual disciplines, or mission, we begin with the foundation: a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Everything in Saved Life rests on this first step.
Pages 8-9
Begin With the Foundation.
The first question is not, "How bad is my problem?" but, "Do I know Jesus?" No amount of discipline, information, community, or willpower can accomplish what only Christ can do. Biblical recovery begins with salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ - not self-effort.

Why the Journey Starts With Jesus
Saved Life begins by confronting both our deepest problem and our deepest instinct: we are separated from God by sin, yet we naturally try to rescue ourselves. The gospel replaces self-rescue with grace.
We Share the Same Problem
Every person has been affected by the Fall. Visible struggles differ, but all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
We Cannot Save Ourselves
Salvation is not self-improvement. It is the gift of God, received by grace through faith - not earned through performance.
Jesus Did What We Could Not
Christ lived the life we could not live, died for sin, and rose in victory. The gospel is good news about what He has accomplished.
Salvation Is Received by Faith
Knowing facts about Jesus is not the same as knowing Him. Biblical faith turns from self-reliance and trusts Christ personally.
From Self-Rescue to the Saved Life
From Eden forward, fallen humanity has tried to cover shame, control outcomes, and establish life independently of God. The gospel dismantles the illusion that we can fix ourselves.
- My performance earns acceptance.
- I hide what is broken.
- I build identity on what I do.
- I insist on controlling my life.
- Grace is received, not earned.
- I come honestly into the light.
- My identity begins with belonging to Christ.
- I surrender my life to Jesus.
Jesus never invited people merely to admire Him. He called them to follow Him. Denial of self, the cross, obedience, community, and mission are not substitutes for salvation; they are the life that grows from salvation.
A Simple Gospel Framework
The doorway into the transformation journey is the gospel. Salvation begins with Christ, and discipleship grows out of belonging to Him.
Created for Relationship
We were created in God's image to know Him, love Him, walk with Him, and reflect Him.
Sin Broke Relationship
The Fall brought guilt, shame, death, and separation. Every person participates in this brokenness through sin.
Christ Came to Redeem
Jesus bore sin's penalty and rose again. Redemption is accomplished by Him, not by us.
The Journey Begins
We respond by faith, then learn to follow, surrender, obey, and become increasingly like Christ.
Soul Check
This is not an exam. It is an invitation to honesty. Ask God to show you where you are resting in grace and where you are still trying to rescue yourself.
Group Discussion
- Why is it important that Saved Life begins with Jesus rather than with recovery techniques?
- What is the difference between knowing about Jesus and trusting Him personally?
- Why do people often prefer self-improvement to surrender?
- How can an Outpost create an environment where people can admit spiritual need without shame?
- What would it look like for us to keep the gospel at the center for all 24 weeks?
This Week: Move From Self-Reliance to Christ-Reliance.
Begin each day by consciously moving from self-reliance to Christ-reliance. Read, pray, and respond with one concrete act of trust or surrender.
The goal is not to impress God with effort. The goal is to keep turning toward the One who saves, leads, and transforms you.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith... it is the gift of God."Ephesians 2:8
Start Where Self-Sufficiency Ends.
Do not begin this journey by promising God that you will become stronger. Begin by admitting that you need Him. Jesus is not the first item on a recovery checklist; He is the foundation.
If you belong to Christ, keep following Him. If you have never trusted Him, the invitation is open: come honestly, humbly, and in faith.
The Saved Life begins with Jesus Christ.
